Kuwait Escalates Illegal Crypto Mining Crackdown, Questioning 116
Kuwait has intensified its crackdown on illegal crypto mining activities, questioning 116 individuals during investigations into the unauthorized use of electricity for mining operations in 59 residential properties. This enforcement comes as the nation copes with rising temperatures and heavy demands on its power grid, including widespread blackouts attributed to excessive electrical consumption. Authorities highlighted that with electricity costs at only 4.6 cents per kilowatt-hour—much lower than U.S. averages—this has spurred illegal mining activities since crypto mining has been illegal in Kuwait since July 2023. The Ministry of Interior has vowed to implement strict legal measures against violators. The drive to control crypto mining follows the discovery of over 1,000 locations running unregulated mining rigs in the country. The crackdown is a part of broader energy conservation efforts amid growing environmental concerns and the pressing need to manage the national grid effectively as summer heats up.
