Jameson Lopp, the chief security officer at Bitcoin custody company Casa, has raised concerns about Bitcoin address poisoning attacks, a form of social engineering scam targeting Bitcoin holders. These attacks involve fraudsters generating BTC addresses similar to those in a victim's transaction history, tricking them into sending funds to a malicious address. Lopp's analysis revealed that these fraudulent transactions began appearing in the blockchain on July 7, 2023, and surged regularly over 18 months, with close to 48,000 such transactions identified. He urged Bitcoin users to meticulously verify the addresses before sending funds and advocates for improved wallet interfaces that display full addresses. This surge in address poisoning exploits follows a wave of cyberattacks leading to significant financial losses, including an estimated $1.6 billion in stolen funds in early 2025, largely attributed to sophisticated scams linked to the Lazarus Group. Lopp's warning serves as a reminder of the ongoing cybersecurity threats facing the cryptocurrency industry.
