Inside ‘eccentric’ Ripple founder’s multibillion-dollar space station plan
Jed McCaleb, the founder of Mt. Gox and co-founder of Ripple, is developing an ambitious space station company called Vast, aiming to launch Haven-1, a commercial space station, by May 2026. If successful, this could position Vast to win a significant NASA contract to replace the International Space Station. McCaleb, known for taking risks, expressed his commitment to advancing human life beyond Earth. Vast is utilizing SpaceX technology to create the station and has secured SpaceX flights for transport. The company is competing against other prominent players like Axiom Space and Blue Origin. Beyond launching Haven-1, McCaleb plans for Haven-2 to feature recycling technologies for long-term sustainability. Both McCaleb and Vast’s CEO Max Haot are prepared to take personal risks by boarding space flights themselves, reflecting their dedication to the project and vision for human exploration of space.
