Indonesia suspends WorldID over alleged registration violations
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s digital identity project World, previously known as Worldcoin, has come under scrutiny in Indonesia as local regulators temporarily suspend its registration certificates. The Indonesian Ministry of Communications and Digital (Komdigi) announced the halt of the Electronic System Operator Certificate Registration (TDPSE) for World and World ID due to suspicious activity and alleged violations. Investigations found that World’s local subsidiaries may be operating without proper registration and involved in legal misrepresentation. Komdigi emphasized that all digital service providers must comply with registration requirements under Indonesian law, with noncompliance considered a significant violation. The temporary suspension is seen as a measure to mitigate potential risks to the community, and authorities are seeking public vigilance against unauthorized services. Community responses have been mixed, with some praising the action as a stand against scams, while others express concern over potential implications for users. This development occurs amidst ongoing global regulatory challenges faced by World’s offerings, particularly regarding biometric data security.
