Indonesian regulators have suspended the operations of World, a biometric ID project led by Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI. The suspension comes after allegations that the project failed to register for the necessary licenses, including the Electronic System Organizer Registration Certificate required by Indonesian law. Alexander Sabar, Director General of Digital Space Supervision, indicated that the suspension serves as a preventive measure against potential risks to the community. The regulatory body claims that World used a registration certificate belonging to another legal entity without proper authorization. Besides Indonesia, World has faced challenges in other countries, including Germany and Brazil, regarding compliance with local data protection laws. Despite the suspension, the project is making strides in the U.S., having launched its services in major cities such as Atlanta and Los Angeles, offering users cryptocurrency tokens in exchange for biometric data.
