India to launch generative AI model in 2025 amid DeepSeek frenzy
India is set to release a generative AI model in 2025, according to Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. Speaking at the Utkarsh Odisha Conclave, Vaishnaw noted that the country has acquired a significant amount of high-performance computing resources, including 18,693 GPUs, of which 12,896 are Nvidia H100s. The government aims to attract $20 billion in foreign investments for developing data centers over the next three years. Vaishnaw indicated that multiple developers are expected to deliver AI models tailored to India's diverse languages and cultures within the next six to eight months. This announcement comes soon after the unveiling of DeepSeek R1, an open-source AI model that has shown competitive performance to existing leading models at a lower training cost. The context of this launch is influenced by recent US export controls on AI chip sales, which may affect global competitiveness in the AI sector.
