Guatemala's largest bank, Banco Industrial, has integrated SukuPay's stablecoin rails to facilitate remittances from the U.S. to Guatemala. This innovative solution allows users to send funds using only a phone number through the Banco National mobile app Zigi, with a flat fee of just 99 cents per transaction. This marks a significant advancement as it represents the first usage of a crypto-native protocol within a prominent Latin American retail bank. The SukuPay system operates on the Polygon network and utilizes the USDC stablecoin, reflecting the growing trend of stablecoins for practical financial applications, particularly in regions where traditional banking is limited. Currently, remittances to Guatemala total approximately $21 billion annually, highlighting the importance of this financial service in the nation's economy, where only 35% of adults had access to formal banking as of 2022. SukuPay aims to enhance financial inclusion by providing straightforward cross-border money transfer options without requiring users to create cryptocurrency wallets.
