Google to enforce MiCA rules for crypto ads in Europe starting April 23
Google will implement stricter advertising policies for cryptocurrency services in Europe starting April 23, requiring that advertising exchanges and wallets be licensed under the Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) framework or the Crypto Asset Service Provider (CASP) regulations. Advertisers must also comply with local legal requirements and obtain certification from Google. This change follows the December 2024 implementation of the MiCA framework, aimed at enhancing investor protection by filtering out unregulated actors and reducing fraud risks associated with initial coin offerings (ICOs). However, legal experts warn that the policy could be overly restrictive, potentially creating enforcement gaps and compliance challenges, particularly for smaller exchanges facing significant capital requirements. While the policy aims to bolster trust in the industry, critics argue it may primarily shield Google from liability rather than enhancing investor protection.
