Gary Gensler, former chair of the Securities and Exchange Commission, has returned to MIT to teach and conduct research on AI in finance, financial technology, and regulatory policy. He will also co-direct the university’s FinTech AI @CSAIL initiative. Previously, Gensler taught a course titled “Blockchain and Money” at MIT, where he posed questions about the future of finance and cryptocurrency to his students. Gensler has been a controversial figure in the crypto community due to his stance that most cryptocurrencies should be classified as unregistered securities and his enforcement actions against various crypto entities. During his lectures, he indicated that a significant portion of the crypto market does not fall under traditional securities regulations. His past leadership at the SEC, notably classifying assets like Algorand's ALGO as unregistered securities, has affected the regulatory landscape for digital assets, prompting the industry to anticipate clearer frameworks as his SEC leadership ends.
