Funding from crypto falls short in New Jersey gubernatorial primaries
In the lead-up to New Jersey's gubernatorial primaries, contributions from the cryptocurrency sector have significantly declined compared to previous elections. Filings with the New Jersey Election Law Enforcement Commission revealed small donations linked to the crypto industry to candidates in the Democratic and Republican races. Notably, only $4,000 in contributions were identified, including a $500 donation to Democrat Josh Gottheimer and a $2,000 contribution from a mining CEO to Democrat Ras Baraka. This contrasts sharply with the crypto industry's extensive financial involvement in the 2024 federal elections, where PACs spent over $130 million supporting candidates. While cryptocurrency advocates like Stand With Crypto organized events to promote candidate engagement with crypto issues, they have not contributed financially to the gubernatorial race. The total expenditure for the primary is projected to exceed $85 million, but crypto funding remains minimal, indicating a shift in the political financial landscape for this sector.
