France charges 25 over crypto kidnapping spree in Paris
French prosecutors have charged 25 individuals, including six minors, in connection with a series of crypto-related kidnappings. The group, aged between 16 and 23, is facing charges for multiple plots targeting prominent figures in the cryptocurrency sector, notably including Pierre Noizat, the CEO of French crypto exchange Paymium. Eighteen suspects are in pre-trial detention, while others have requested hearing deferrals or remain under judicial supervision. This investigation stems from a kidnapping attempt in Paris’ 11th arrondissement, where Noizat’s family was attacked by masked assailants. The suspects come from various backgrounds, and many are described as young individuals seduced by potential financial gain. This wave of crypto-related kidnappings is part of a troubling trend, highlighted by earlier high-profile cases including the abduction of Ledger co-founder David Balland. Authorities are stepping up efforts, calling for better cooperation between law enforcement and crypto firms for enhanced security measures as the threat of kidnapping for cryptocurrency grows.
