Former New York governor advised OKX over $505M federal probe
Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo was hired by cryptocurrency exchange OKX to provide guidance regarding a federal investigation focused on the company's violations of Anti-Money Laundering laws. This legal oversight occurred after OKX agreed to pay $505 million in fines and penalties, stemming from transactions conducted from 2018 to 2024, despite having a policy against U.S. residents using its services since 2017. Cuomo reportedly offered advice to OKX executives on managing the investigation, which concluded with the company’s admission of guilt on February 24. His role included influencing executive appointments, advising OKX to place his associate, US Attorney Linda Lacewell, on their board in 2024, subsequently naming her as chief legal officer. This development comes as OKX seeks to enhance its regulatory compliance efforts following the federal probe, aiming to establish itself as a leader in global compliance practices.
