Figure AI, a startup specializing in AI-powered humanoid robots, has ended its collaboration with OpenAI, claiming to have achieved a significant advance in robot intelligence. CEO Brett Adcock announced that the company made a major breakthrough in fully end-to-end robot AI developed entirely in-house, rendering their partnership with OpenAI unnecessary. This decision follows months after both companies had publicly committed to a collaboration that valued Figure at $2.6 billion and aimed to enhance the humanoid robot's language capabilities using OpenAI's models. Adcock stated that as large language models (LLMs) became more common, relying on external AI partnerships no longer aligned with Figure's goals. With new contracts, including one with BMW Manufacturing and plans for 100,000 robots over four years, the company aims to leverage its in-house technology for adaptability and performance. Adcock teased a forthcoming announcement within 30 days, promising something unprecedented in humanoid robotics.
