EY has transitioned its Ethereum layer 2 enterprise blockchain, Nightfall, to a zero-knowledge rollup design, allowing for faster transaction finality. According to an announcement made on April 2, the new version, Nightfall_4, simplifies the architecture and enhances accessibility for users. This update eliminates the need for challengers to wait for potentially incorrect transactions to finalize on Ethereum, providing near-instant finality instead. EY’s global blockchain leader, Paul Brody, highlighted that this fourth major update retains the privacy and scalability benefits of previous versions while improving the overall system. Nightfall enables EY's partners to utilize Ethereum's security features at a higher transaction rate. The solution is tailored for sectors such as finance, logistics, and manufacturing. Despite the new features, Nightfall remains a permissioned blockchain, catering specifically to EY’s client base. Competitors in this market include R3 Corda and Consensus-built Quorum.
