Ethereum to Sunset ‘Holesky’ Testnet in September
Ethereum will discontinue its largest test network, Holesky, following challenges encountered while testing the upcoming Pectra upgrade. The Ethereum Foundation announced plans to wind down Holesky, with a complete shutdown expected by September 30. The decision results from Holesky going offline due to February's faulty test of the Pectra upgrade, leading to weeks of recovery and subsequent issues like inactivity leaks that affected its validator system. Holesky was designed for testing by Ethereum's validator ecosystem, supporting up to 1.4 million validators. The newly launched Hoodi test network, which went live recently, will replace Holesky and aims to test the Pectra upgrade on March 26. Assuming successful tests, developers plan to implement Pectra on the Ethereum mainnet 30 days later. Tim Beiko from the Ethereum Foundation has encouraged stakers to utilize Hoodi as their new testing ground.
