Ethereum co-founder Joe Lubin on the future of Ethereum
Joe Lubin, co-founder of Ethereum, spoke at the Digital Asset Summit about the future of the Ethereum network, emphasizing the importance of layer-2 (L2) scaling solutions. He highlighted that the mature Ethereum ecosystem allows developers to innovate directly on the layer-1 network without the need for extensive bootstrapping. Lubin mentioned the emergence of advanced databases and layer-2 networks, naming Linea and an upcoming project called MegaETH as significant contributors. He noted that newer layer-1 chains will struggle to compete with Ethereum's existing robust architecture and security. Despite having over 140 scaling solutions, including 60 rollup networks, investor skepticism surrounds the economic value added by these L2 networks. Following the Dencun upgrade in March 2024, Ethereum's average gas fees were significantly reduced, leading to a flattening of network fees. However, this drop in fees coincided with a decline in Ether's price, which has impacted investor behavior significantly, indicating a cautious outlook for 2025 amid a broader downturn in crypto markets.
