EigenLayer plans to start slashing restakers on April 17, marking a significant step toward fully implementing its restaking model. Slashing is a method used to penalize node operators for poor performance or misbehavior, crucial for securing proof-of-stake protocols like Ethereum and EigenLayer. Previously, slashing was limited to testnets, but will now be introduced on the mainnet. Node operators can opt-in gradually, ensuring a smoother transition. Since its launch in 2023, EigenLayer has secured various third-party protocols, using restaked cryptocurrencies as collateral. The protocol has seen the deployment of over 30 actively validated services (AVSs) and aims to attract crypto-native applications in decentralized finance and gaming before exploring broader consumer markets. EigenLayer's growth includes distributing its native EIGEN token to incentivize restakers, indicating its commitment to building an infrastructure for new verifiable applications.
