DOGE proposes slashing Internal Revenue Service staff by 20%
The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by Elon Musk, has proposed a 20% reduction in the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) workforce, expected to take effect by May 15, 2025. This reduction would affect approximately 6,800 IRS employees, in addition to layoffs already experienced by 6,700 probationary staff and 4,700 IRS agents. However, a US district judge's recent ruling may delay these layoffs by reinstating affected probationary workers. President Trump has also committed to comprehensive tax reforms that may include plans to exclusively fund the federal government through alternative means. Elon Musk's DOGE is investigating measures to shrink the federal workforce and improve efficiency, while the SEC has submitted a budget request of $2.6 billion amidst ongoing cost-saving directives. Critics, including Senator Elizabeth Warren, have raised concerns over DOGE's proposals, reflecting a broader debate over government efficiency and spending.
