DeepSeek, a China-based AI company, has announced an upgrade to its chatbot, the DeepSeek-R1-0528 model. This new version boasts enhanced reasoning capabilities, significantly improving its logic, mathematics, and programming skills while reducing the hallucination rate. The startup claims that the model's performance is now approaching that of leading competitors such as OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Gemini 2.5 Pro. Since its debut in January, the original R1 model had already garnered 75 million downloads and 38 million monthly active users by April. In context, Google reported that Gemini reached 350 million active users in March, while ChatGPT claimed 600 million. The announcement comes as the U.S. government seeks to restrict advanced chip software sales to China, highlighting the competitive landscape of AI development across countries, including new models from Tencent and Alibaba in early 2025.
