Changpeng Zhao, the former CEO of Binance, has denied claims that he agreed to testify against Tron founder Justin Sun in a plea deal with the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ). The Wall Street Journal reported Zhao had reached an agreement to provide evidence against Sun, a claim Zhao dismissed as politically motivated and baseless. He called out the Journal for its reporting and stated that government witnesses are protected and do not go to prison. Zhao, who previously served time for Anti-Money Laundering violations but maintained his status as a wealthy individual, reported that he was warned about the article’s intent. Sun also denied being aware of the rumors, referring to Zhao as his mentor and close friend. Zhao speculated that the WSJ report may be linked to lobbying efforts against him and Binance, further alleging that certain individuals are attempting to influence regulatory decisions against his operations. These comments come amid ongoing concerns regarding political contributions and their impact on regulatory landscapes in the cryptocurrency sector.
