Cybersecurity researcher ZachXBT has revealed that law enforcement detained the wrong individual in connection with a 2022 theft of Bored Ape non-fungible tokens (NFTs) valued at over $1 million. ZachXBT reported on May 9 that they had identified the wallet associated with the scam, linking it to a now-deleted X account. In 2023, law enforcement mistakenly apprehended Sam Curry, a former Yuga Labs security researcher, at an airport as a suspect in the incident. ZachXBT expressed regret over the misidentification, stating it was unfortunate that a security researcher was detained when more credible evidence pointing to the true threat actor was available. The theft, executed by an anonymous attacker, involved the pilfering of 14 Bored Ape NFTs, which were valued at approximately $86,000 each at the time of the incident. Presently, Bored Ape NFTs are trading around $30,000 but fluctuate based on individual characteristics.
