Outgoing CFTC Commissioner Summer Mersinger announced that crypto perpetual futures contracts could soon receive regulatory approval to trade in the US. Speaking on Bloomberg TV, Mersinger indicated that applications for these contracts are in progress and expressed optimism about seeing live trading shortly. She emphasized the importance of bringing crypto derivatives back onshore, suggesting it would benefit the industry significantly. As it stands, crypto perpetual futures are traded mainly on offshore exchanges, such as Binance and Bybit, but are not currently permitted in the US. Mersinger highlighted that the recent movement on the GENIUS stablecoin bill further signifies the viability of the crypto asset class in the US economy. Mersinger is set to leave the CFTC at the end of May to lead the Blockchain Association, following the current CEO’s resignation. She expressed her belief in positioning the US as a leader in the economic potential of cryptocurrency.
