Coinbase Hacker Trolls Crypto Sleuth ZachXBT After Moving $42M in Bitcoin
ZachXBT, a well-known crypto investigator, is being mocked by a hacker linked to a $300 million theft from Coinbase. The hacker expressed ridicule through an Ethereum transaction that included a taunting message and a link to a meme video featuring NBA legend James Worthy. The hacker transferred approximately $42.5 million from Bitcoin to Ethereum using the THORChain swapping protocol. This incident follows the recent disclosure that a data breach affecting over 69,400 Coinbase users occurred in December. The breach was revealed in a filing to the Maine Attorney General, where Coinbase mentioned that cyber criminals bribed overseas customer support agents to access sensitive user information. Following the breach, attackers demanded a $20 million ransom in Bitcoin, which Coinbase refused, opting instead to offer the same amount for information leading to the perpetrators' arrest. ZachXBT's identification of the threat actor adds another layer of complexity to an already serious situation, as Coinbase faces potential financial damages of up to $400 million due to remediation costs and customer compensation.
