China-based Huawei to test AI chip aiming to rival Nvidia
Huawei, the Chinese tech giant, is preparing to test its latest AI chip, the Ascend 910D, which aims to compete with high-end processors from Nvidia. According to a report from The Wall Street Journal, Huawei has contacted local tech firms to receive sample chips for testing by late May. While development is in the early stages, Huawei expects its Ascend AI processor to surpass Nvidia’s H100 chip, previously released in 2022. Meanwhile, Huawei plans to distribute over 800,000 earlier models of the Ascend 910 chips to various customers, including state-owned telecoms and private companies like ByteDance. Amid escalating trade tensions between the US and China, the Chinese government is encouraging local AI developers to use domestic chips. This includes restrictions that the US has placed on the export of certain components essential for AI chip production. Chinese President Xi Jinping has emphasized the country's goal of achieving self-reliance in technology, particularly in AI and semiconductor capabilities, at a recent Politburo meeting.
