Chiliz meets with SEC Crypto Task Force amid US market reentry plans
Chiliz, a sports-focused cryptocurrency firm, has engaged with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to discuss potential reinvestment and reentry into the U.S. crypto market ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The planned reentry may involve an investment of $50 million to $100 million. Interest has been expressed from NBA and NFL teams in launching fan tokens, pending regulatory clarity. During the April 22 meeting, Chiliz CEO Alexandre Dreyfus also hinted at a follow-up with White House officials. The firm is advocating for the classification of fan tokens as non-securities, despite ongoing regulatory debates surrounding cryptocurrencies in the U.S. However, Chiliz has witnessed a significant decline in its ecosystem's activity, with the total value locked dropping 63.5% from late 2024. The company, well-known for its partnerships with top football clubs, faced challenges in 2022 due to regulatory uncertainties following the FTX collapse. As a major host of the upcoming World Cup, the U.S. presents a strategic opportunity for Chiliz.
