Can Bitcoin’s 21-Million Limit Survive Quantum and Cross-Chain Pressures?
The 21-million limit of Bitcoin, defining its scarcity and value, is being challenged by potential quantum computing threats and increasing cross-chain utility demand. The QRAMP protocol, proposed by Bitcoin developer Agustin Cruz in early 2025, aims to secure Bitcoin against quantum risks while allowing it to extend into other blockchain ecosystems without affecting supply limits. Unlike existing custodial solutions, QRAMP uses cryptographic attestations to represent BTC on external systems, ensuring it remains tethered to real Bitcoin. It highlights the need for a migration to quantum-resistant addresses, as quantum computers could potentially break the current cryptographic protections. The approach involves identifying vulnerable addresses, replacing them with quantum-resistant BTC, and ensuring accountability through verifiable burns. Although QRAMP may introduce synthetic assets, it does not inflate Bitcoin’s underlying supply and preserves its 21-million cap. The success of QRAMP hinges on community adoption and user participation, making it a significant consideration as Bitcoin navigates future challenges.
