A California man, John Khuu, has been sentenced to 87 months in federal prison for his involvement in laundering profits from MDMA sales on the dark web using Bitcoin. Khuu, 29, from San Francisco, pleaded guilty to conspiracy for money laundering and operating an unlicensed money-transmitting business. He imported MDMA from Germany and sold it on dark web platforms, accepting Bitcoin payments. Khuu then converted these Bitcoins into U.S. currency, laundering the money through numerous transactions across various accounts. His arrest was part of Operation Crypto Runner, a multi-agency investigation targeting crypto money launderers in the U.S. This enforcement action highlights the federal government's increasing focus on cryptocurrency-related criminal activities, especially as the amount laundered through cryptocurrency continues to rise, surpassing previous records. The Department of Justice, U.S. Secret Service, and Postal Inspection Service have been leading these initiatives, underscoring the evolving landscape of drug-related money laundering operations.
