Brown University Bets on Bitcoin With Millions Worth of BlackRock ETF Shares
Brown University has reported an investment of nearly $5 million in Bitcoin through BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF (IBIT), as indicated by a recent SEC filing. As of March 31, the university owned 105,000 shares of the ETF, valued at approximately $4.9 million, which has since appreciated to about $5.8 million. While this is a notable investment, it represents a small fraction of Brown's overall endowment, which exceeded $7.2 billion at the end of the 2024 fiscal year. The university has diversified investments across multiple asset classes, adapting its investment strategies amid evolving financial markets. Other universities also exploring Bitcoin exposure include the University of Austin, which set up a $5 million endowment, and Emory University with nearly $16 million in Bitcoin, showing a trend among academic institutions towards cryptocurrency investments. Brown’s investment strategy reflects a growing acceptance of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies within traditional financial sectors.
