A group of seven British men received a total of 76 years in prison for the kidnapping and brutalization of a man to steal his cryptocurrency assets, valued at hundreds of thousands of dollars. The victim was taken from his home in Irlam, Greater Manchester, in December 2023 and suffered various assaults, including being tied up, drugged, and threatened with death. Over a series of five attacks starting in January 2023, the men inflicted serious physical damage and had already coerced the victim into paying them over $124,250 (£100,000). Police seized weapons from the scene, including firearms and knives, after receiving an anonymous tip. Jonathan Newns and David Povey were sentenced to 20 years each for their roles in the crimes, while the other five men received sentences ranging from two to 14 years. This incident is part of a disturbing trend of violent home invasions targeting cryptocurrency holders.
