Worldcoin, a cryptocurrency project co-founded by Sam Altman, has been banned in Brazil after its appeal to the National Data Protection Authority (ANPD) was rejected. The ANPD raised concerns about the project’s practice of rewarding users for biometric data collection, which they feared could unduly influence consumer behavior. Their guidelines stipulate that consent to process such data must be freely given and informed. Worldcoin requested an additional 45 days to adjust its operations and halt these financial incentives but was denied this extension. The project now faces a ten-day window to confirm it has ceased crypto payouts in Brazil. Worldcoin stated it respects the ANPD’s decision and would continue to provide educational resources on its initiative, which involves scanning users' irises to generate a unique World ID for verifying identity online. The initiative reflects ongoing scrutiny of biometric data practices globally, following earlier concerns raised in Germany regarding compliance with EU data protection laws.
