Bitcoin gambling: How SatoshiDice picked up where Satoshi left off
SatoshiDice emerged in 2012 as a pioneering Bitcoin betting platform, created by Erik Voorhees. It allowed players to place bets by sending Bitcoin to specific vanity addresses linked to different odds. The original gaming experience capitalized on Bitcoin's low transaction fees and rapid processing times, often confirming bets within 30 seconds. Players could achieve substantial payouts, with some odds as high as 65,000x for small deposits. SatoshiDice's operations contributed significantly to Bitcoin's traffic, reportedly handling over half of all Bitcoin transactions shortly after its launch. Despite its success, concerns arose regarding its potential to overload the Bitcoin blockchain with non-economic activity. Voorhees eventually sold his stake for 126,315 BTC in 2013, later using the funds to establish ShapeShift. Overall, SatoshiDice not only exemplified the potential of Bitcoin gambling but also illustrated the economic complexities within the crypto ecosystem.
