Binance, Kraken Thwarted Social Engineering Attacks Similar to Coinbase Hack
Binance and Kraken recently defended against social engineering attacks aimed at customer support, similar to a recent breach that affected Coinbase. Attackers attempted to bribe customer service agents and primarily communicated via Telegram. Both exchanges successfully blocked these attempts without compromising customer data. These incidents echo techniques used in a Coinbase breach where hackers bribed overseas employees to gain access to sensitive information, leading to substantial remediation costs for Coinbase, estimated between $180 million and $400 million. Binance's proactive measures, including AI systems to detect bribes and strict access policies for customer data, were instrumental in averting potential losses. Coinbase's troubles reportedly began in January, with unusual activities noted as early as December, raising alarms among rival exchanges about targeting of its major clients.
