Binance claims ‘no special relationship’ with Hamas, argues to dismiss lawsuit
A complaint filed in January 2024 alleged that Binance, Changpeng Zhao, Iran, and Syria provided substantial assistance contributing to Hamas’ 2023 attacks on Israel. In a federal court in New York, Binance's lawyers argued against the lawsuit, asserting no special relationship existed between Binance and Hamas. They contended that allegations of facilitating transactions for Hamas were unfounded. The lawsuit claims that Binance and Zhao enabled funding for terrorist activities and concealed this from US authorities, leading to the October 7, 2023, attack. Binance's legal team also emphasized that cryptocurrency itself is not inherently dangerous and that the claims against them were legally insufficient. The complaint followed Zhao's guilty plea in federal court and Binance's $4.3 billion settlement with US officials for failing to maintain an effective Anti-Money Laundering program. The judge has yet to decide on the motion to dismiss the lawsuit.
