Australian Man Forfeits $2.5M in Bitcoin Without Charges After AFP Crypto Probe
A Queensland man has forfeited over $2.9 million in assets, including approximately 25 BTC valued at $2.6 million, following a court order from a criminal probe. This investigation stemmed from a tip-off to AUSTRAC about suspicious Bitcoin transactions linked to the man, who has a prior hacking conviction. The Australian Federal Police’s Criminal Assets Confiscation Taskforce identified the seized assets as disproportionate to the man's income. Since mid-2019, the taskforce has restrained around $770 million in suspected criminal assets, with the forfeiture reflecting Australia's ability to seize assets tied to criminal activities under proceeds of crime laws without necessarily filing charges. The forfeited assets will be utilized to fund community crime prevention and law enforcement programs.
