Argentina Anti-Corruption Office Clears Milei Over LIBRA
Argentina’s Anti-Corruption Office has cleared President Javier Milei of any wrongdoing regarding his promotion of the LIBRA memecoin, stating that he acted in a personal capacity when endorsing it on social media. This decision was published in a resolution on June 5 and indicates that Milei did not breach any federal ethics laws applicable to public officials. The controversy arose after Milei's endorsement reportedly influenced a market cap surge for LIBRA to $4 billion but later exhibited characteristics typical of a pump-and-dump scheme. The Anti-Corruption Office emphasized that no public resources were involved in Milei's endorsement and noted that his social media presence has consistently served as a platform for personal expression since 2015. Nevertheless, despite the clearance, a federal court investigation into the LIBRA scandal is ongoing, sparking criticism from some opposition members about the adequacy of the investigation process. Additionally, polls indicate a decline in public trust in Milei following the incident, with approval ratings dropping significantly since November 2024.
