Amazon Invests $13B in AI Data Centers in Australia by 2029
Amazon plans to invest over $13 billion in expanding its artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud infrastructure in Australia, marking the largest publicly announced technology investment by a global company in the country. This investment, projected to reach 20 billion AUD (approximately $13.4 billion) by 2029, is aimed at enhancing Amazon Web Services (AWS) data centers and building new facilities across Australia. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese highlighted that this investment will create economic opportunities, generate skilled jobs, and provide infrastructure necessary for advanced AI and supercomputing applications. Additionally, part of the funding will go towards constructing three new renewable solar farms in Victoria and Queensland, increasing Amazon’s commitment to renewable energy in the region. This initiative is expected to produce around 1.4 million megawatt hours of carbon-free energy annually, sufficient to power approximately 290,000 homes. The investment aligns with the broader trend of significant contributions of AI and automation to Australia’s economy, projected to add $400 billion to the nation’s GDP by 2030.
