Alarm bells ring in US over OpenAI’s crypto project
World Network, a digital identity and crypto project from OpenAI, has raised alarms among privacy activists prior to its US launch due to concerns about data collection practices. The technology, originally called Worldcoin, uses iris-scanning and has faced regulatory scrutiny in several countries, with outright bans in Spain, Hong Kong, and Brazil. CEO Sam Altman's venture aims to operate in five US states but will grapple with varied state privacy laws and potential exploitation of user data. Andrew Rossow, a legal expert, noted there is no federal law regulating biometric data in the US, adding to the uncertainty for users. While some experts see promise in World’s privacy mechanisms, the project faces severe backlash from activists who highlight risks of discrimination, profiling, and surveillance. Meanwhile, the system is also being tested in Japan's dating apps, indicating some global interest despite opposition.
