Anna Kazlauskas argues that data portability in the crypto space is essential for enhancing user experience rather than just a theoretical concept. Current digital platforms restrict users' control over their data, leading to vulnerability, especially highlighted during discussions of potential bans on platforms like TikTok. Despite many attempts at creating portable data solutions, such as NFTs and decentralized networks, widespread adoption has not yet been achieved. AI can now provide a compelling reason for users to pursue data portability, enabling personalized experiences by utilizing their data across applications. However, challenges remain in incentivizing users to connect their data, as well as developers resistant to making portability easy. Innovative solutions like DataDAOs could create financial incentives for users to migrate their data to self-sovereign systems, making it feasible for developers to leverage rich user data for advanced applications. This convergence of AI's capabilities and new incentive structures presents a significant opportunity to fulfill the original promise of a user-owned internet.
