A16z doubles down on LayerZero with $55M investment
Venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) has announced a $55 million investment in LayerZero, a Web3 company known for its crosschain messaging protocol. This significant investment was revealed by Ali Yahya, a general partner at a16z, through an X post on April 17. A16z previously invested in LayerZero during its Series B funding round in April 2023, which included participation from other notable investors like Circle Ventures, OKX Ventures, and Sequoia Capital. Additionally, in January 2025, LayerZero settled a legal dispute with the FTX Estate over allegations linked to a liquidity crisis. LayerZero launched its own token, ZRO, in June 2024. The crosschain messaging protocols are crucial for decentralized applications (DApps) and facilitate seamless swaps across different blockchains, an increasingly valuable feature in the industry. Competing protocols include Wormhole, Stargate, and Chainlink, as more companies recognize the importance of being chain-agnostic.
