7-Eleven stores in South Korea have begun accepting the Bank of Korea’s central bank digital currency (CBDC) as part of a pilot program running through June. Customers with accounts at seven partner banks, including Kookmin and Shinhan, can make payments by scanning a QR code from their digital wallets at checkout, similar to existing mobile payment options. To stimulate usage during this trial, 7-Eleven is offering a 10% discount on products purchased with the digital currency. Moon Dae-woo, head of digital innovation at 7-Eleven, highlighted the initiative as a step towards enhancing store efficiency through digital transformation. This trial marks one of the first substantial tests of a CBDC in a retail environment in South Korea, following earlier endeavors by the Bank of Korea to explore digital currency options.
